Singer Miley Cyrus is among the cast of the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. She has made waves for her shocking, viral moments on stage at the awards show in the past. Here’s why Cyrus’ participation in the 2020 event is a change from a pre-established pattern.
Miley Cyrus made a statement with her first VMA appearance
Although she had been a nominee and presenter at the awards ceremony years earlier, Cyrus made her MTV VMA performance debut in 2013. First she sang her song “We Can’t Stop”. Then she undressed and singer Robin Thicke accompanied her on stage for his song “Blurred Lines”
The effects of Cyrus’s performance were felt everywhere. Many parents of children who adored the entertainer for her role on the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana were outraged and Cyrus discovered that she has a sturdy platform on which to make a difference. Meanwhile, MTV learned that the singer is a huge draw for the VMAs.
She returned to host the awards ceremony
Cyrus took part in the 2014 VMAs where she received the grand prize: Video of the Year for her single “Wrecking Ball”. But she didn’t return as a performer until the next year when she took the event by storm as the hostess. Cyrus has had several costume changes and more viral moments, including her swaps with Nicki Minaj.
On top of all of this, the artist ended the night with a previously unheard of song, “Dooo It!” That feat was even bigger than their 2013 one and featured the band The Flaming Lips and contestants from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Cyrus also announced their final album, Miley Cyrus & her dead Petzwas online for free.
She also performed on the 2017 and 2019 shows

Cyrus has played on the MTV VMAs twice since appearing. She sang the title track and the second single from her album Younger now at the 2017 awards ceremony. While it was still a very colorful performance (in more ways than one), it marked a decidedly different period in her career as it leaned on her roots in the country.
Then, in 2019, Cyrus skipped the theater. She was there as a nominee, but at the last minute MTV announced that the singer would perform her standalone single “Slide Away,” which she dropped a few days earlier. Cyrus dropped her usual dancers and colors for a soulful vocal performance.
Cyrus’ 2020 MTV VMA’s performance of ‘Midnight Sky’
At this year’s event, Cyrus will again record a recently released single. On August 14th, the artist dropped her first solo song since “Slide Away” entitled “Midnight Sky”. And if the eye-catching music video means anything to the disco-pop track, their VMA performance will be a return to form.
Cyrus was open to doing things differently this time around, and the very fact that she’s performing at the 2020 VMAs is proof of that. There’s a pattern above: she’s performed every two years on the service of an upcoming album. Cyrus breaks that with “Midnight Sky” this year.
