Neil deGrasse Tyson is known for sharing scientific knowledge with the masses. He was also very open to his feelings about popular films. Tyson fans know how often he talks about scientific inaccuracies in science fiction films. Titanic is not a science fiction film, but Tyson also had a problem with a scene in the film.
Most people criticize the films they see. However, Tyson is influential enough to get James Cameron to change a scene Titanic when it came back to the cinemas. Here’s what Cameron changed – and Tyson’s feelings in a controversial scene from the film.
The inaccuracy in “Titanic” that Neil deGrasse Tyson noticed
Titanic is largely historically correct. Certain characters – especially those involved in the film’s central love triangle – are fictional. However, most of the other characters in the film are real people and the plot remains true to the film’s actual demise Titanic.
However, Tyson noticed an inaccuracy in the film that many other people may not have noticed. In one scene, Tyson noted that the stars did not resemble the star landscape that would have been in the sky at the time. Tyson took the time to email Cameron a “snarky” email about the error.
According to Cinema Blend, Cameron recalled, “Neil deGrasse Tyson sent me a rather snappy email saying that at this time of year in 1912 Rose was lying on the piece of driftwood in this position in the Atlantic and staring at the stars, that is not the star field she would have seen. And with my reputation as a perfectionist, I should have known that and I should have used the right star field. So I said, “All right, send me the right stars for exactly this time and I’ll include it in the film. ‘”
Cameron stayed true to his word. The scene was changed for TitanicRe-released in 2012. The Washington Post found that the change of stars in the night sky was the only major revision of the film for its re-release. However, Tyson had another problem with the film.

The most controversial scene in the film is the scene in which Rose steps up to a floating door. She uses it as a raft while Jack stays in the freezing water. Jack dies from the intense cold. Some fans think Rose should have allowed Jack to come to the door. Others believe the door could not have carried the weight of two adults.
According to The Huffington Post, Tyson falls into the former camp. “Whether he would have been successful or not, I would have tried it more than once. You give it a try.” Oh, that won’t work. I’m just going to freeze to death in the water. “No, excuse me.”
Tyson couldn’t see Titanic as a perfect film. However, he got one of his criticisms of the film incorporated into the film itself. Not many other people can say that.
