Nico Hulkenberg raved about his first day in the Racing Point RP20 after driving for the team in the eleventh hour of the weekend.
He finished training sixth fastest on Friday after flying back from Germany yesterday to take over Sergio Perez’s car.
“The last 24 hours have been special,” said Hülkenberg. “Crazy and wild.
“Yesterday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. I got the call and took a plane here. Had a seat until 2 am last night. Then this morning at 8 a.m. in the simulator for an hour, a little preparatory work, so it was a short night. But everything is worth it.
“It was a great effort by the team, I would like to thank the team and the night shift people who did a great job of fitting me in the car, and even quite comfortably, and the FIA for making it so fat of the super license. It was very special. “

Hülkenberg has not driven an F1 car since December last year and admitted that he felt the strain on his body after his first day in the RP20.
“We have the program in many rounds that I feel. I was really thrown into the cold water here. I think my body will feel it tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. It’s obviously a big challenge, but I’m not shy. “
“The G-forces are difficult to train because they are so unique and special,” he added. “Although I’m in good shape, this type of G-Force, and especially here, is one of the fastest high-speed lines. And at 35 degrees, I also choose the hottest day in the UK. I have the best of everything. “

He said the car feels “very different” from the Renault he drove last year. “Today I tried to go step by step, to familiarize myself with the car and to understand it,” he said.
“It just takes time to breathe in, understand, know how to drive and learn. Obviously there is more time tonight to focus on learning. I can only say that it is pretty quick here today. “
After finishing his first day of training six tenths of a second behind his teammate and pacemaker Lance Stroll, Hülkenberg says that there will be more from him tomorrow.
“You see the enormous potential,” he said. “The car is extremely fast.
“I didn’t take advantage of the top tire so well, I think I have a bit more in my pocket and I have to use this tire better. But of course we will work on it all night and try to get the best out of the car this weekend. “
