The violent cyclone storm Gaja, which crossed the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry between Nagapattinam and Vedaranniyam in the early morning hours of Friday – with a wind speed of 100 – 110 km / h Gusts at 120 km / h brought heavy rains in coastal areas, said the Meteorological Department of India.
At least six deaths were reported in Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts – one person was electrocuted while the Wall breach claimed five others.
The cyclone caused damage to land, especially in Vedharanyam in Nagapattinam district. The hurricane has also wreaked havoc in Pudukkottai district. The strong wind damaged several thatched houses and uprooted many trees and power pylons in the districts of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Pudukkottai.
Power was disrupted in the districts of Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Pudukkottai, Karaikal, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Trichy. In Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai and Puducherry a total of 46 substations were affected. Officials said it could take at least two days for power to be restored.
Traffic was affected on Nagore-Nagapattinam because of several uprooted trees on the road. They were removed. The mobile network in Nagapattinam district was interrupted. Seawater flooded many fishing villages, including Keechankuppam and Akkaraipettai, in the Nagapattinam district.
Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Trichy and Ariyalur districts also had moderate to heavy rainfall. For schools and colleges in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Trichy, Ariyalur, Madurai, Theni Karur, Erode and Dindigul a holiday was announced on Friday.
