In 2020, Porsche Taycan comes with up to 750 hp, $ 150,900 base price

The Taycan will first come on the market with turbo and turbo S variants.

Porsche

Four years after Porsche showed us the original Mission E concept the 2020 Taycan is finally here, even before its public debut at the IAA 2019 in Frankfurt. The new electric vehicle from Porsche follows numerous teasers, a hatchback concept ( that we later drove ) and the construction of a new factory to build the first company battery electric vehicle , Numerous tests enabled him to achieve a record lap time on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring for a four-door electric car. We even drove a prototype . More importantly for buyers is likely that there is finally a real alternative to the Tesla Model S which gives it the great luxury electric sedan sleep. Whether Porsche will be able to solve Tesla's stranglehold on the segment remains to be seen, but handsome looks, gonzo performance, and a technically-laden cabin seem to enable the Taycan to do so exactly that when it comes later in the year in the trade.

Slim, slippery and sturdy. Mission E Concept to the production Taycan. The bent stance of the exterior, the low sloping front end, the pronounced fenders, the flush door handles and the continuous rear light bar make up the section . Four-point LED daytime running lights are also included. The Taycan will be launched with turbo fairing on 20-inch wheels and a Turbo S specification, which comes standard with carbon fiber fairing and 21
-inch wheels. (Yes, we realize that it's strange to use "Turbo" and "Turbo S" for a car that uses no turbocharger or, as you know, an internal combustion engine.)

Taycan Turbo has the lowest air resistance of all Vehicles in the current Porsche series. A complete underbody paneling also contributes to the slippery aerodynamics. The Taycan Turbo S cuts with a drag coefficient of 0.25 slightly less efficiently through the air.

At its heart, the Taycan body consists of a mixture of steel and aluminum, which are connected to a variety of elements by various welding methods, screws, rivets and adhesives. Occupant safety is enhanced by hot-forming steel for the body pillars, the side roof frame and the seat cross member as well as boron steel for the bulkhead cross member. All this increases occupant safety.

For performance reasons, the shock absorber bearings, axle bearings, and rear side members are die-cast or forged aluminum, while all body panels, with the exception of the front and rear bumpers, are also made of aluminum to shave weight. In total, 37% of the Taycan are made of aluminum.

The Taycan has a lower center of gravity than the Porsche 911 GT3.

Porsche

Electrical Power

The Taycan uses a new battery-electric powertrain that consists of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor on each axle and imbues the Taycan with all-wheel drive. At the front, the power is transmitted to the wheels via a single-speed gearbox. Rear is powered by a two-speed gearbox with a short first gear for maximum acceleration and a long second gear for maximum speed and efficiency. Power is supplied by a 93.4-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, which at the same time represents a structural chassis component and keeps the center of gravity low.

The results are impressive: The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo delivers 670 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque. Porsche estimates that thanks to a 2.5-second overboost period the Taycan will dash to 60 mph in 3 seconds and cover the quarter mile in 11.1 seconds. In the Taycan Turbo S-shape, the overboost performance increases to 750 horsepower and 774 pound-feet. This corresponds to a speed of 2.6 seconds between 0 and 60 miles per hour and a quarter of a mile of 10.8 seconds, according to Porsche. Both models reach a top speed of 162 miles per hour.

The crucial range depends on how strong the Taycan is driven and in which mode it is driven, two-wheel drive that decouples the rear axle. On the other hand, the most performance-oriented Sport Plus offers maximum power for all four wheels. A US-specified EPA range estimate is not yet available, but the Porsche's own WLTP-based test estimates the range for the turbo to be 279 miles and for the Turbo S to 256 miles. As with all other WLTP-to-EPA conversions, there is no exact conversion method, but the US numbers are likely to be slightly below these preliminary estimates.

With its 800-volt charging system, the Taycan's battery capacity can rise from 5% to 80% in just over 22 minutes under 270 kW DC fast charge.

Porsche

Juicing

Porsche developed an 800-volt charging system specifically for the Taycan. According to Porsche, juicing the battery from 5% to 80% charge in ideal situations takes just 22.5 minutes. A DC quick charger offers a power of 270 kW. Loading times depend on weather conditions and infrastructure, but Porsche has taken steps to solve both problems.

To reduce load times in both hot and cold temperatures, the battery can be thermally preconditioned with a charge planner. The owners only have to set a departure time in the planner, and the car heats or cools the battery automatically to achieve optimal charging times.

In the solution of roadside infrastructure problems Porsche has partnered with Electrify America which currently has 268 charging stations in the US. Another 160 are under construction. By the end of 2020, 600 high-performance charging stations are to be in operation on motorways. Every Taycan sold in the US will be charged for three years free for Electrify America locations.

In addition, all Porsche dealers will offer Charging Stations and a Porsche Charging Service App will help locate other charging stations that contain information such as state of charge and connector types and number of open plugs ,

Both the turbo (right) and the turbo S (left) are offered for launch.

Porsche

At home, where Porsche anticipates 80% to 90% of the charging process, the company offers a charging station and a mobile charger that connects to a 9.6 kW plug and refreshes the Taycan in 11 hours. Since an electric vehicle is the largest power-consuming part of a house's power grid, Porsche has also developed an energy manager that can be built into a house's circuit breaker. It is able to manage the power flow of a home, optimize costs, use solar energy and provide power failure protection by reducing the car's charge when other home appliances such as refrigerators or dryers are turned on and the maximum power threshold of the circuit breaker exceed. Performance is nothing without control, and the Taycan has it for sure, as evidenced by the aforementioned lap record at the Nürburgring . To improve the reflexes of the over 5,000-pound vehicle contributes to the stiffest chassis on which a Porsche production vehicle has been built so far. This is an over-wide track with a lower center of gravity than a 911 GT3 air suspension, fully variable four-wheel drive system, torque vectoring rear axle differential, and faster traction control reflexes. To further enhance this, the Turbo S will be fitted as standard with rear-wheel steering, which is optional on Turbo models.

To improve the speed, the Turbo uses 10-piston calipers that push down on 16.3-inch front brake discs and four-piston disc clamps with 14.3-inch rear brake discs. The Turbo S is equipped with slightly larger 16.5-inch carbon ceramic discs in the front and 16.1-inch discs in the rear. As a battery-electric vehicle, the Taycan has a brake energy recovery when lifting the pedal in various modes, from off for pure coasting to full throttle, which Porsche covers 90% of all stop events and reduces brake wear.

You will find sustainable materials and screens galore.

Tech Forward Cabin

Inspired by 911, the cabin has a sleek design with a 16.8 inch digital instrument cluster and four modes that occupy the highest point on the dashboard. Cabin trim options include standard leather and timbers, but also sustainable options such as naturally tanned leather and even faux leather for customers who want a cowhide environment. All Taycans] comes with a glass roof that provides 100% UV protection, thanks to a combination of dark glass, hue and low-e coating to keep things bright and airy inside. Speaking of air, climate control is completely digital, so you can even control the direction of the vents through a touch panel control panel. Two modes are pre-programmed for direct and indirect airflow, while an individual setting allows fine tuning of the ventilation settings as desired. A two-zone climate system is standard, but a four-zone setup is available that allows rear passengers to control their half via a 5.9-inch screen.

Taycan introduces a new infotainment system with a 10.9-inch screen Center touchscreen provides navigation with real-time traffic, voice commands, Apple CarPlay and the first complete integration of Apple Music into a vehicle . For music playback, Bose and Burmester audio systems are available to play back studio-quality Apple Digital Masters files from a library of more than 50 million titles. Another interesting infotainment bug from Taycan is the availability of an additional 10.9-inch touchscreen for passengers. The $ 1,100 option allows passengers to search for music and enter destinations or waypoints independently of the center screen.

Prices for a Taycan Turbo start at $ 150,900, but only if you order now.

Coming soon

The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo and Turbo S will arrive at dealers later this year. Prices start at $ 150,900 for the Turbo and $ 185,000 for the Turbo S if you book a car now. Both numbers do not include $ 1,350 for the destination. If the car officially starts, the starting price for the turbo increases to 153,310 US dollars and for the Turbo S to 187,610 US dollars.

While the Porsche executives are not yet confirmed whether less powerful versions of the Taycan sedan are in the pipeline, no one has yet This fact was completely denied. Judging by the numerous repetitions of every other Porsche model in production, it is certain that more Taycan models are on the way. What we know, however is a production car based on the Mission E Cross Turismo Concept and will appear in Showrooms by the end of 2020 .
