Today there is a new study on weapons possession in America. This is news in and of itself as the NRA has done everything in its power to suppress research on firearms and gun violence. But just this poll gives something that seems to me to be a very clear truth: you do not need handgun.
The study, published in the journal Pediatrics analyzed data on gun ownership over the last 41
According to CNN, the following happened:
This increase was associated with a doubling of child mortality from firearms during the past decade, which was partially explained, according to the study.
Child mortality from firearms peaked in the late 1970s and early 1980s until 2001, the study says. Rates have risen again, almost doubling in the last decade, from .36 per 100,000 children ages 1 to 4 to .63 per 100,000.
This is just a piece of evidence to present a case we really should not need arguing anymore. You do not have to own a handgun. If you own a child and have a small child, that child is at risk. "But I lock up my weapons, the problem is irresponsible gun owners," people will cry. If you own a handgun, there's a chance it will kill your child. The child makes a mistake or you make a mistake and your child will be dead. A handgun is small; The geometry that the barrel shows when it expires is particularly deadly compared to a heavier weapon. Children do not understand that. Adults usually do not understand this.
Handguns exist for one reason: to kill people. People say that a weapon is a tool all the time. Yes. Weapons are tools. Their function is death. A handgun is a tool for killing people. Your ranch gun or hunting rifle? It is reasonable to say that they have a purpose that does not kill people. (They're meant to kill things that are not human.) An AR-15 or another military rifle also serves to kill people, but that's an argument for another day. They do not hunt with a handgun. I'm sure people do that, I was on the track and shot one of those big Colt pythons someone sticks to an object or whatever, but you're an asshole and an idiot when you do that.
But gun shooting is fun, you could say! Yes it is fun. But it's not so funny that it's worth thousands of preventable deaths.
Need a handgun for self-defense? No you do not. If you are so frightened and unsure that you need to keep a firearm in your home, get yourself a shotgun that is easier to secure, easier to use, and much less likely to pierce the walls of your home is. It is also less likely that your child will die accidentally. A tall, heavy shotgun is much more difficult for a toddler than a small, lightweight handgun, as the study's findings seem to prove.
The following happens when you try to shoot a handgun in self-defense: There is a good chance you will miss, or you hit something you did not want to hit. Most likely it is that the other person who has a weapon shoots you first or takes your weapon and shoots you or you manage to shoot them, but they shoot you back. One study found in 2009 that persons in possession of a weapon were shot 4.46 times more frequently in an attack than persons who did not have a weapon. Policemen trained to shoot people with pistols always shoot the wrong people. They will not stop a crime. If you stop a crime, you will be an extreme outlier of a trend that leads to the death of innocent people. Why bring that into the equation? If you're honest with yourself, it's because you feel powerful with handguns. I really understand it. You can kill everything with a handgun, but most of the time you can kill people as well. You can hide it in your waistband, pocket, or jacket, and walk around with the power to kill anyone you see almost immediately. This will make you feel strong and in control. But it is a lie. When people shoot each other, nobody has control. You do not have to tell this lie anymore. You do not need a handgun.
