22,000 employees stare into the bleak future as Jet flies into the night

NEW DELHI: After battling the dying light for several months, Jet Airways flew gently into the night on Wednesday – at least for now. India's longest-serving private airline ceased operation after a 26-year journey. During this time she flew 650 flights daily at its peak. The shutdown leaves a big question mark for the future of over 16,000 direct and 6,000 contractual employees.

Jet will only go back to heaven when he finds a new buyer to revive him.

"On the late night (Tuesday), Jet was informed by SBI on behalf of the Indian lenders consortium that they can not validate its request for critical bridging finance … The airline will not be able to pay for fuel or other critical services to keep the operation running. Jet Airways must therefore immediately cancel all international and domestic flights. The last flight will be on Wednesday, "Jet said Wednesday in an application for BSE approval announcing the temporary closure.

The airline sent one SOS last Tuesday to emergency lenders of 983 rupees (Rs 983) to stay afloat.
