A young Indiana couple on his honeymoon to St Kitts in the Caribbean wandered the island's dormant volcano as the husband fell in.
Indianapolis Clay Chastain has been recovering from a fractured skull since last fall.
Mount Liamuiga, the highest mountain on St. Kitts, has a lush crater full of plants due to its inactivity.
According to his social media, on July 18 Chastain attempted to climb in from the path into the crater with the help of ropes that led to the summit.
"I confided too much weight to the ropes and tore one of them," Chastain wrote on July 1
Acaimie Chastain told the Indianapolis Star that she had climbed into the crater after her husband's fall to save him.
"I was crazy about what I would find below," she said, adding that no one was around at the time.
She helped Clay come out of the crater and assisted him along the path until they had a cell phone service to call for help, the couple said. Chastain said he "collapsed and vomited" the entire way back.
"It was a miracle that he was able to sustain himself as long as he did with his injuries," Acaimie Chastain told the Indianapolis Star, who reported that Clay had a fracture at the base of his skull, chapped vertebrae , have suffered a hearing loss in the right ear and a severe concussion.
"To be honest, it's amazing that my injuries were not worse, thanks to God's help," he said on Facebook.
Because of the fractured skull, Chastain said on Facebook that he could not fly commercially to return home. Instead, he needed a flying emergency plane to avoid high air pressure. The couple seemed to spend $ 35,000 on a GoFundMe site for the trip, which NBC News could not independently review.
According to the donations page, the couple NBC News contacted should comment. Fly from St. Kitts to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Wednesday night.
