Court documents filed by prosecutors this week seemed to give some insight into the way the investigators had planned to use Gates' cooperation in investigating Manafort with Russian intelligence.

These documents, filed in the case of London lawyer Alex van der Zwaan, allege Gates had been in contact with an unidentified individual who believed the FBI had ties to a Russian intelligence agency in the months leading up to the 2016 presidential election [19659006] This person, identified in court documents only as "Person A", is referred to as a business partner of Manafort. The Washington Post reported this week that the person met the description of Konstantin Kilimnik, a longtime Russian employee of Manafort.

The investigators of Mueller told Gates that they needed his help in investigating the possible contacts of the Trump campaign with the Russians to investigate the special adviser, which began as an investigation into possible collusion between the campaign and Moscow.

The prosecution filed a lawsuit in October against Manafort and Gates for money laundering, tax evasion and fraud, among others. Gates pleaded guilty to plotting and lied to FBI agents in February. He cooperates with Müller's investigation.

However, Manafort pleaded not guilty and insisted that he did not do anything wrong.
