The iPhone SE

As a background story, the first iPhone SE was launched in 201

6, continuing the iPhone 5 era design and bringing devices like the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 to the market. The iPhone SE was at the low end of the iPhone range, priced at $ 399 for 16GB of storage.

The iPhone SE was unique in that it offered the specifications of the then modern iPhone range at a lower price and in a lower price a smaller form factor. Portions of it will apply to the rumored "iPhone SE 2", but there are also some important changes to Apple's strategy.

Design

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone SE 2 will have a similar design. This means that the device has a 4.7-inch display with Home button, in contrast to the design without a frame and iPhone 11 face ID authentication.

On the back is a rear view camera with a lens. To keep costs down, Apple will keep the camera array of the iPhone SE 2 relatively simple. However, it is not known if features such as portrait mode can be activated through the software.

Kuo has announced that the iPhone SE 2 will be available in gray, silver and red. The addition of red is remarkable, as it is usually a popular color that was added to the iPhone 8 product line mid-year.

All in all, Apple is not trying to re-invent the wheel with the iPhone SE 2. Instead, the design that made the iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8 so popular remains what makes sense given Apple's intended upgrades ,

Specifications

Similar to the original iPhone SE, the new iPhone SE will be just as powerful as modern iPhones. According to supply chain reports, the iPhone SE 2 is likely to be equipped with Apple's A13 processor. This is the newest and best Apple processor that is also used in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. The iPhone SE 2 is also supposed to have 3GB of RAM, 1GB less than the iPhone 11, but still more than enough for almost anything you could throw on it.

It's been whispered that Apple is working on an iPhone Do not expect the iPhone SE 2 to be the device that supports both Face ID and Touch ID. An iPhone 8-like design is expected to support the iPhone SE 2 Touch ID for biometric authentication.

In particular, the integration of the A13 processor means that iPhone SE 2 will be supported by iOS in the coming years. Apple is targeting iPhone 6 users with the new iPhone SE, and these people have been holding cell phones for five years. Thanks to the A13 processor, they should be able to do the same thing with the iPhone SE 2.

Price and Publication

According to Kuo, Apple is aiming for a $ 399 startup price for the iPhone SE 2 with 64GB of storage. You can also upgrade to 128GB, probably $ 449 for $ 499.

The original iPhone SE was introduced in 2016 with $ 399 for a 16 GB configuration. When Apple discontinued the SE in 2017, the entry price had dropped to $ 349 and the base storage capacity had doubled to 32GB. Basically, you get the iPhone SE 2 at the same price as the original iPhone SE, but with four times more storage space.

What about the current iPhone 8? It is still available in the Apple product range. The company sells the 64GB iPhone 8 for $ 449. Given that the iPhone SE 2 is likely to be cheaper and more powerful, it must be assumed that the iPhone 8 will be removed from the Apple product range in the context of the launch of the iPhone SE 2.

When should we expect the iPhone SE 2? Approved? Kuo expects to release in the first quarter of 2020. Apple has made a habit of hosting special events in March in the last few years. This could also continue in 2020 – especially given the fact that the original iPhone SE was released in March 2020 in 2016.

Naming

Last but not least, a note on naming. Kuo continues to refer to this 4.7-inch low-end iPhone as "iPhone SE 2". As already mentioned, this new iPhone is not a successor to the iPhone SE in terms of form factor.

The original iPhone SE was equipped with a 4-inch display, which made it so popular with many people. The so-called iPhone SE 2 will be much larger with 4.7 inches, with the goal of making iOS 13 available to more users – not for those who like the smallest possible phone.

Kuo has no insight It is unclear whether Apple will call this device iPhone SE 2, iPhone 9 or something completely different.

Summary

As Kuo said, Apple's goal with The iPhone SE 2 is designed to inspire those who still use the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus for upgrading. This makes sense, especially considering that these devices were removed from iOS 13 this year.

Since iOS 13 is not supported on the iPhone 6, these users can not access the latest Apple services such as Apple Arcade and Apple TV +. A low-cost iPhone SE 2 makes it easy for users to upgrade and therefore extends the active user base that can access Apple Arcade and Apple TV +.

Apple's goal is clearly to attract more users to subscription services, even if this means offering more affordable yet equally powerful iPhone hardware. Analysts have predicted Apple could sell over 30 million iPhone SE 2 phones in 2020. What you should not expect from the iPhone SE 2 is a 4-inch successor to the original iPhone SE. Apple has clearly changed its trajectory and apparently has no plans to release another 4-inch iPhone.
