JERUSALEM – The Israeli military hit a Gaza observation post Sunday and killed three Palestinian militants after the troops found a bomb planted along the border.
The military said a tank fired a shell at its militant position in southern Gaza after Israeli forces detonated an explosive device along the security fence with Gaza, which was supposed to harm soldiers at the border. The Palestinian Ministry of Health said three people have been killed and the Islamic Jihad militant group identifies them as its members.
Gaza militants regularly plant explosives near the sensitive border and occasionally injure Israeli soldiers. On Saturday militants invaded Israel for a short time and set fire to it. In response, Israel took Hamas positions.
"We will not tolerate attacks on us from the Gaza Strip," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at his weekly Cabinet meeting. "The army and security forces work around the clock to protect the state of Israel, Israeli citizens and Israel's borders."
The violence comes at a strained time along the border. More than 110 Palestinians were killed in weekly protests that began on March 30, aiming to lift an Israeli and Egyptian blockade of Gaza imposed after Hamas seized power in 2007.
Hamas has promised to continue the rallies. Israel says it defends its border as well as its nearby communities. He accuses Hamas of attempting to carry out attacks under the guise of protests.
