Israel's education minister said at a Cabinet meeting this month that the rate of marriage between US Jews and non-Jews is like a "second holocaust," a report said Tuesday.
Rafi Peretz made the statement in July Axios reported that Benjamin Netanyahu had attended a Cabinet meeting of Israeli Prime Minister.
Peretz responded to a discussion by officials at the meeting about the growing rate of marriages between Jews and non-Jews around the world, particularly in the United States.
He said that due to the rate of mixed marriages, the Jewish people "lost 6 million people", which is "like a second holocaust," the report said.
Peretz received a certain setback for his remarks also from Energy Secretary Yuval Steinitz, who said: "First, we must stop ignoring and focusing on Jews in America who understand themselves not only religiously but also culturally and historically as Jews Axanyahu ended the meeting by stating that he was most concerned about US Jews who deviated from Jewish traditions.
Peretz, an Orthodox rabbi, is the leader of a right-wing alliance in Israel that has helped shape Netanyahu.
