Yesterday, July 18, the first case of human West Nile virus infection was reported in the 2019 summer season. The infection hit a 79-year-old man, who lives in the countryside in the province of Padua and suffers from persistent fever for 10 days.
The message was officially transmitted by the Preventive Department of the Health and Social Services of the Veneto Region.
In 2018, the first mosquito positivity was detected on June 7, and the first human case was reported on June 16, about a month earlier than this year.
"The regional entomological surveillance network – points to the health adviser Manuela Lanzarin ̵
The situation other than 2018, according to the region's experts, is partly due to meteorological factors (colder spring season and therefore less favorable for mosquito proliferation).
"However – adds Lanzarin – an important contribution to limiting the proliferation of mosquitoes is achieved through the coordinated and systematic implementation of the larvicidal and adulticide pest control measures at regional level provided for in DGR 174 of 22 February 2019, based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Health. "
This provision establishes a regional cross-sectoral technical table on vector-borne diseases, prepared with the support of the Ministry of Health and the Higher Institute of Health, chaired by the Health Council and coordinated by the Prevention Unit., Veterinary Food Safety. Finally, the aforementioned DGR mandated that a cross-sectoral technical firm table should be set up in each ULSS company to coordinate and monitor the actions undertaken by the municipalities. In 2008, it will be transmitted to humans by the genus Culex In addition, in our area, the Aedes albopictus mosquito (tiger mosquito), which transmits Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viral infections, is also present in this area for some years, a type of mosquito stands out preferably in daylight, with maximum activity in the hours after dawn and in the hours before sunset.
West Nile virus infection – according to Councilor Lanzarin – in most cases Some cases are asymptomatic in humans. In 20% of cases, mild symptoms such as mild fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and rash (West Nile Fever, WNF) may occur. In less than 1% of cases, especially older and weakened people, high fever, muscle weakness and neurological complications such as encephalitis may occur. The infection is not transmitted by direct infection from person to person, but only by the bite of an infected mosquito or by donating blood and blood components, organs and tissues of infected people. "
Citizens – recommended by regional technicians – can play an important role in preventing the spread of mosquitoes by simply behaving like:
rainwater such as glasses, cans, basins, watering cans, tires, etc.
· Empty all common containers daily with water and if possible turn them upside down
· Cover tightly (even through narrow meshes) immovable water containers (containers, tanks).
To avoid mosquito bites in rooms where If air conditioning is not available, it is strongly recommended to attach mosquito nets to closely meshed doors and windows, and to use liquid insecticides or platelet electromagnetic devices.
Outdoors, for individual protection against mosquito bites, it is advisable to wear light colored clothing as much as possible covered (long sleeves and long pants) .A sufficient level of protection is also provided by the use of repellen which are applied directly to the skin and repeat the treatment with sufficient frequency. When using these products, the instructions on the packaging must be followed carefully, and extreme caution should be exercised in children or sensitive skin. Repellent products should not be applied on the mucous membranes (lips, mouth), eyes or ground skin, but on clothing to increase their protective effect.
