Smoking: The use of electronic cigarettes can reverse tobacco-related harm in patients with COPD

A new study published in the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Riccardo Polosa Director of CoEAR – Research Center for the Reduction of Damage of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine of the University of Catania, proposes that l The use of electronic cigarettes can reverse some of the damage caused by tobacco smoke in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) . Moreover, the use of e-cig in the long term seems to improve the objective and subjective parameters of COPD.

In a 3-year study, researchers conducted a prospective reassessment of changes in objective and subjective respiratory parameters. A total of 44 patients with COPD compared 22 patients who stopped smoking or significantly reduced by the use of e-cig and 22 control patients who were smokers who did not use E-CIG at the time of study. The convincing results of the study showed that patients with COPD who switched to the electronic cigarette showed positive effects even after 3 years

And here are the results:

1; Significant reduction of use of Tobacco cigarettes (from an average of 21.9 cigarettes per day to an average of 2 cigarettes per day after a year of follow-up);
– Significant mitigation of respiratory infections and exacerbations of COPD, with a respiratory physiology not aggravated by the use of E-cig;
– Constant improvement of general health and physical activity;
– Re-flicker of cigarette to tobacco is very low (only 8.3% of patients return to smoking)

It is important to emphasize that even COPD patients who consumed e-cig continued to smoke conventional cigarettes ( Dual User ) reduced daily consumption of conventional cigarettes by at least 75% and showed an improvement in respiratory parameters and quality of life.

Although the sample size in the study was relatively small, the results could provide preliminary evidence of long-term use of e-cigarette should not lead to serious health problems in patients with COPD

COPD is a chronic and progressive lung disease, very obstructive and not completely reversible, caused mainly by cigarette smoking, and which affects about 3 million people in Italy

"Quit smoking is therefore a key strategy to prevent not only the onset of COPD, but also its progression More severe stages of the disease stop – comments Polosa – Since many patients with COPD continue to smoke despite their symptoms, the electronic cigarette could be an effective alternative and it is safe for tobacco cigarettes even in this vulnerable population observation time Only two patients (8.3%) resumed smoking, and both patients were already twice "he added .

This is an important consideration because in smoker populations with COPD standard anti-smoking programs are not effective because of the high relapse rate.

Dr. Pasquale Caponetto co-author of the study, suggests that the low recurrence rate of smokers with COPD is due to e-cig because "these instruments reproduce the experience of smoking and ritual companions with large compensatory Effects Both Physically and Behaviorally ".

In terms of improving health, the co-author dr. Massimo Caruso argues that " halving COPD exacerbations in patients who had stopped or significantly reduced the use of tobacco cigarettes after switching to e-cig is an exceptional finding that has the potential confirms the inversion of the damage of these products ".
