According to the superstar couple, “they had a very difficult time” and split up when Pinkett Smith started a romantic relationship with the 27-year-old singer.
During her “Red Table Talk” chat, Smith urged his wife to make it clear what their relationship with Alsina had been like.
“I was involved with August,” said Pinkett Smith.
“I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation,” Alsina said during the interview. “Because of the change from their marriage to (a) a civil partnership that they have spoken of several times and that does not involve romance, he gave me his blessing.”
Alsina said he had lost money and relationships because of rumors that he had been linked to Pinkett Smith, 48.
The actress and her 51-year-old husband have long been rumored to have an open marriage.
In the aftermath of Friday, the two said they felt compelled to speak out because there was so much speculation after Alsina’s interview.
“We never said anything,” said Will Smith. “When we got to the table, we felt that it was time to say something.”
Pinkett Smith said she started a friendship with Alsina about four and a half years ago, and that got more when she and her husband got to a difficult point.
She also said she wanted to clear up Alsina after saying that her husband had given permission for the affair, although she added that she understood why the young singer thought it was possible.
“I am the only person who can give permission under these special circumstances,” she said. “I could actually see how he would perceive it as permission because we were separated amicably and I think he also wanted to make it clear that he is also not a home winger. What he is not.”
The actress said she was in “great pain” and “broken” during the relationship.
She and Will tried “everything we could to get away from each other, only to realize that this was not possible.”
Pinkett Smith said her relationship with Alsina had ended, the Smiths had reconciled, and she hadn’t spoken to the singer in years.
She said that she and her husband had now come to a place of “unconditional love”.
Smith said he wasn’t sure he would ever speak to Pinkett Smith again if they had problems, but he reminded them of their commitment.
“I told you in the first year of our wedding that I could love you with anything,” said Will Smith.
The couple bumped their fists when they jokingly recited the rendering of his film motto “Bad Boys”: “We ride together, we die together. Bad marriage for life.”
