9659002] New York-based JetBlue Airways increased baggage charges for the first checked bag earlier this week to an industry high of $ 30, breaking away from the rival industry, including American, Delta and United. Southwest Airlines allowed two more checked baggage items Free, while Spirit and Frontier, the largest ultra-low-cost carriers in the US, each require $ 50 and $ 40.

Additional baggage charges also increase on JetBlue: According to Bloomberg, who broke the story on Monday morning, the fee for the Checking a second bag on JetBlue from $ 35 to $ 40, while the fee for checking a third bag from 100 to 1 $ 50 is also up from $ 100 a bag to $ 150.

The new fee structures have all been updated on the JetBlue website.

"Customers always tell us what they love most about JetBlue: free fly-fi on all aircraft, live TV and free entertainment, the most legroom on the bus, free snacks and great service," said Doug Mcgraw, Vice President, Corporate Communications at JetBlue Airways. "We routinely review and adjust our supplements to ensure a healthy business so that we can continue to provide the best customer experience for a US carrier."

Mcgraw added that the Blue Plus fares on the airline, which typically cost $ 10-15 more than standard fares, include free checked-in luggage and other benefits.

JetBlue's increased fees actually come at a time when the airline is working overtime to increase profits and offset higher operating costs. After an excellent first quarter, the airline was hit hard by 42% higher fuel prices and rising maintenance costs for an aging fleet. As a result, the airline's second quarter was significantly weaker.

The airline has already taken measures to reduce the cost of baggage delivery. At the end of July, the airline cut jobs at its New York headquarters. In December, he raised the same-day charge for changes to the flight and created a charge for standby mode.

JetBlue trains will together help to compete better as fuel prices continue to rise and other airlines put pressure last week United announced that it would consider using reclining seats on some of its aircraft to work with people like JetBlue to compete. And while some argue that adding fees makes JetBlue more of a legacy carrier, the airline and McGraw are quickly pointing out its distinctive features, such as free WiFi, free seat back entertainment, and the Mint Business Class product – a cabin, which is generally praised as one of the best in the country.

These distinctions may eventually begin to erode as the fuel price continues to rise, but for now JetBlue still has enough ammunition to call itself unique from other old carriers.
