Sam Darnold, the quarterback of the New York Jets, has to pause indefinitely after diagnosing a mononucleosis, as coach Adam Gassen announced on Thursday.
Trevor Siemian will face the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. The coach suggested the earliest return as week 5 at the Philadelphia Eagles after the 4th week of jets. They play in Week 3 at the New England Patriots.
"I do not want to make predictions," Gase said when he was asked about Darnold's return after a certain time. "I'm just glad that we have the Bye week if we do that."
Gases and a team coach and quarterback coach Dowell Loggains brought the news to Darnold late on Wednesday night.
Darnold did not train on Wednesday because of what the team called sore throat. He has already lost weight through the mono, Gases said.
Luke Falk will serve as a backup quarterback of the jets while Siemian is the starter.
Gases also announced that Le Veon Bell will undergo an MRI on his shoulder Thursday and will miss the training.
The Browns were favored by 2.5 points against the Jets at Caesars Sportsbook before the news of Darnold became known. The game is now off the board.
