The legendary coder John Carmack leaves Facebook after 6 years to focus on a personal project – no less than the creation of Artificial Common Intelligence or "strong AI" consulting CTO position, but he becomes his spend all of your time maybe working on the AI, which ultimately surpasses and destroys humanity.
AGI or strong AI is the concept of an AI that learns a lot from how humans do it and as this is not as limited as the extremely tight machine learning algorithms we now call AI. AGI is the science fiction version of AI-HAL 9000, Replicants and of course Terminator. There are also some good ones – Data and R2D2 for example.
So far, AGI does not even need to be seriously defined, let alone tackled by researchers. It is an open question whether such a thing is even possible and if we can do it ̵
Carmack announced the move to Facebook, where he explained the uncertainty about it A fascinating and exciting topic has attracted him exactly.
When I think about everything I've done in the areas of games, aerospace and VR, I've always had the sense of having at least a vague "line of sight" of the solutions, even if they were unconventional or unproven. I've sometimes wondered how I feel about a problem where the solution really is not in sight. I decided to give it a try before I get old.
His plan is to pursue it from home in the "Victorian Gentleman Scientist" style and get his child to help him. It's a bit like someone retiring prematurely to devote all his life to the perpetual motion machine he's been working on. Except that Carmack actually has a chance to create something remarkable, combined with foresight and creativity, which has led him to skim the state of the art, sometimes pushing him seriously one way or the other.
Unlike his work at Oculus however, we are unable to buy the result of his expertise, so we just have to wait and see what happens, if at all. I wish him good luck – but I also wish he would be careful.
