John Legend spoke about how he moved away from former close friend Kanye West.
The 41-year-old singer said his relationship with Kanye was no longer as it used to be since the two musicians are now in “different places” in their lives.
During an interview with The Times, John was asked if the reason for their bad relationship was Kanye’s apparent support from Donald Trump’s presidency.
“I don’t think we’re less friends because of the Trump thing,” said John. “I just think we’re doing our own thing. He’s in Wyoming [where Kanye purchased a $14 million ranch].
He said that he and Kanye had never talked to each other about politics.
“It was never part of our interaction. Our interaction was almost always about creativity and music,” said John, who signed with Kanyes label GOOD Music in 2004.
The All of Me hitmaker worked with Kanye on several hit tracks, but said her musical careers go in different directions.
“He’s making gospel music. That’s what he’s concentrating on and designing his clothes, so we’re in different places.”
In the past, employees became so close friends that John was asked to perform with Kim Kardashian at Kanye’s wedding in 2014.
But in April 2018, Kanye caused a stir when he shared private messages between himself and John on Twitter.
A tweet contained a screenshot of a message from John that said, “Hey, it’s JL. I hope you’re rethinking Alining [sic] you with Trump.
“You are far too powerful and influential to confirm who he is and what he stands for. As you know, what you say really means something to your fans.
“They are loyal to you and respect your opinion. So many people who love you feel cheated just because they know the harm Trump’s guidelines cause, especially to people with color.
“Don’t let that be part of your legacy. You’re the greatest artist of our generation.”
At that time, Kanye was very public in his support for Trump.
“I love you John and I appreciate your thoughts,” replied the rapper. “You tell my fans, or my legacy, and it’s a fear-based tactic used to manipulate my free thoughts.”
Kanye later explained why he had been driven to share their private messages on social media.
“I tweeted the John text to show that there are people around me who disagree with me and give their opinion. I respect everyone’s opinion, but I stand by my position. If you feel that Don’t let peer pressure manipulate you. “
