The fashion-oriented GQ interviewed Jones Ive, Apple's legendary designer, to celebrate Apple's launch of Apple's second generation of AirPods this week. The piece opens with an important theme: AirPods looked ridiculous to all before they became a cultural lightning strike.
Here is the answer from Ive:
"It's a response based on an academic understanding of them, rather than a practical daily understanding of them," said Ive. "We usually focus on those attributes that are easy to talk about, and just because we talk about them does not mean that they are the important attributes. All that means that they are those that are easy to talk about.
To describe how much work was needed to pinpoint the current design of AirPods, Ive shows not just what the wireless earphones look like, but how they interact with the case and how the case itself snatches :
"If you want to have objects that are inherently very mechanical, I think it's so important to pay attention to all aspects of the design. There's color and form and the whole kind of architecture, but then these are more difficult-to-define behaviors and behaviors, like the click of a noise and the power of a magnet pulling something closed, "says Ive.
Apple's Design SVP admits that previous versions of AirPods were not always as instinctive as the final product that was delivered:
"For example, one of the things we were struggling with was the art and the way in which the case orientates AirPod as you use it. I love these details, that you had no idea how great we did wrong, as long as we designed and developed it. If you understand them correctly, they probably will not ask you for much, but they do much more than people are aware of your sense of enjoyment and use of a product. "
Apple brought the first update to the original AirPods with the second generation of the same name. The new AirPods incorporate an H1
Apple now also sells an optional wireless charging case for all AirPods or customers or upgraders of new AirPods can pay a premium to use the new wireless charging case with the new AirPods.
