MINNEAPOLIS – After his defeat on Saturday night, Junior Dos Santos congratulated his opponent Francis Ngannou on an important victory. The former UFC heavyweight champion, however, believes his biggest opponent in the cage could have been himself.
Saturday night ended Ngannou (14- 3 MMA, 9-2 UFC ) Dos Santos (21-6 MMA, 15-5 UFC ) via TKO in the opening minutes of their main event at UFC on ESPN. The loss derailed Dos Santos' hope to fight for his heavyweight belt in his next match while introducing Ngannou to the title debate.
UFC on ESPN 3 took place on Saturday at the Target Center. The card was broadcast on ESPN.
In the final sequence, Dos Santos threw a looped overhand hook that was ultimately missing before Ngannou joined with combat-filled punches. The 35-year-old Brazilian showed up annoyed at the post-fight press conference about the mistake he had made and opened up for the goal.
"If I had pursued the strategy a little more attentively, I think I would do it very well," said Dos Santos at the post-fight press conference. "I felt good. I was fine. My punches combined. My kicks were connecting. I felt good. But the mistake was, why? I should stick to the strategy and just throw blows. Maybe the stitch and the cross would be a better option. If you see opportunities, you are starving for these opportunities. Sometimes you pay a high price for it. "
From his compliments against Ngannou, Dos Santos believes it was his fight to lose. Apart from mental mistakes, he believes that things could have been different if he had stuck to the game plan.
"I do not want to do him any honor, but I somehow brought him this victory," Dos Santos said. "Why are you throwing the excess to the right and getting closer to him? Give him the chance to answer up. Because he does that. Every time you miss him, he's here to answer. It was a big mistake. Like I said, I did it in the fight with Derrick Lewis, but I could (come back). This time it did not work. Where does Dos Santos go from here? Not even Cigano himself can answer that question.
"It was not in my plans (to lose), so I do not really know," said Dos Santos. "I had a lot of plans in a different situation and with a different result, it's so hard to compete in this sport, sometimes everything suddenly disappears before you, I'm a positive guy and ready to rebuild, I know how I am made of truth and I am truth I know how to do it again and I will do it again Congratulations to him "
Dos Santos, who is hurt by the loss, believes that The only remedy for his suffering is to return to the Victory Column.
This injury defeat hits you, "said Dos Santos," I want to fight as soon as I can fight again. Let's go home, think about everything that has happened (and go back to work). I think I belong to this world of struggle.
