A 13-year-old Honduran migrant is buried in New York on Monday after she killed herself while being separated from her father, CNN reports.
Heydi Gámez García tried to hang up and was later declared brain dead. Her family told CNN García that she was released from her life on Thursday and died shortly thereafter.
She had not seen her father Manuel Gámez for four years after sending her to the United States to flee her violent hometown.
García had been granted asylum, but her father had been repeatedly dismissed by the immigration authorities on a trip that preceded the policies of the Trump administration, CNN reports.
Every failed attempt by her father to reach the US pushed García into depression, relatives told CNN.
Immigration officers have released Gámez from a Houston detention center last week to "take care of the affairs of his daughter's death," according to a US immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) order issued by CNN.
He was reunited with his daughter when he was already in the hospital with a breathing tube.
"Please forgive me for abandoning you," Gámez CNN said he would tell his daughter. "I'm sorry I could not be there … I never wanted to leave you."
