The former California Attorney General said she was "so proud to have a daughter from Oakland, California "and said she was born in a nearby hospital. She pledged to directly challenge President Trump and emphasized her work as a prosecutor to argue against the government's immigration policy.
"People, in terms of transnational gangs, let's be clear: the President's medieval vanity project will not stop," said Harris, presumably referring to Mr. Trump's proposed boundary wall.
"If we have children in cages crying for their mothers and fathers, then do not dare to call that border security," she added later. "This is an abuse of human rights."
Harris announced her presidential election on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, after spending months communicating her intentions. She was elected to the Senate in 2016 and has her staff on the powerful judiciary committee to quickly improve her profile. She has designed a plan to provide middle-class tax credits worth thousands of dollars. She wrote a new book, which was published in early January and set out her life story and career as a prosecutor.
