For nearly a decade, singer and celebrity chef Kelis privately recorded the details of her divorce from rap artist Nas. In a recent video interview with Hollywood Unlocked she describes her prominent marriage of five years as a "turbulent and toxic" relationship in which she was both mentally and physically abused.
"I've been self-editing for nine years and woke up this morning and said, 'not today'," says Kelis during the nearly two-hour interview she took home.
When the couple got married in 2005, Nas's status as one of The Largest Living Rapper and Keli's genre-spanning music repertoire immediately made her a hip-hop member of the public. But the fairy tale is far from reality, Kelis claims. She describes a marriage in which they often fought, with Nas often drinking to the point that he got drunk before he became violent towards her. Kelis would fight back in self-defense, she says, and Nas would often wake up without thinking of the events. "Literally we would have the worst night of all time and we would wake up the next day, and it's like it never happened."
Their revelations come in the context of #MeToo, a movement whose impact on sexual assault, harassment, and violence against women has no bearing on hip-hop despite its confused, misogynist story. Russell Simmons, the godfather of the rap industry, was repeatedly charged with sexual assault and harassment last year; One of two assaults on Simmons was dropped earlier this week. But the music industry, and hip-hop in particular, still has to face the large-scale investigation that has hit Hollywood head-on.
In a grim report, Kelis recalls empathy for Rihanna as details of her abusive treatment entered the hands of Chris Brown because she was in the same predicament. "I remember so exactly when the pictures came out with the whole thing that happened to her and Chris Brown, and the only way I can describe it was like being twice Dutch. I felt like," I jump in? ? & # 39; Because at that time I had bruises all over my body, "she says," that day I remember sitting in the kitchen in Atlanta and not ready to leave. "
When she divorced in April 2009 Because of "irreconcilable differences," Nas had cheated on her for two years, claiming that she was pregnant with her son Knight and giving birth to her in July The cover photo of Nas' 2012 album Life Is Good The artist sits with part of the green wedding gown of his ex-wife draped over it's leg.It was left behind when they parted, he said Nas has never acknowledged physical abuse and has yet to publicly respond to Kelis' new claims.
It's not the first time Nas has such allegations rem 2006 published It is no secret wrote Carmen Bryan, the mother of Nas' daughter Destiny Jones: "The next thing I knew was that I was hit in the face with a closed fist "Details of what had happened in the morning after her return, and Nas noticed a hickey on her neck. "The impact of the stroke was so intense that I saw stars."
Kelis' interview comes as part of the recent filing by Nas in the protracted custody battle over her eight-year-old son, which provoked her to comment, she says. "I'm really private, I do not like people in my business," says Kelis, explaining why she remained silent during her marriage. "I felt like," This is my partner; I chose that. We will do that. We will make it. "I stayed for years after that, and you move on, as I said, I'm not weak, I'm not afraid, I'm not weak."
