OAKLAND – Steve Kerr's value to the Warriors goes far beyond planning or organizing games, or when and when you can not call time-out.
Kerr has built a culture in which everyone in the building feels valued. Every successful organization has a hub, someone that everyone feels comfortable with, and within that franchise, Kerr shares that distinction with General Manager Bob Myers.
Two years after honoring Myers with the additional title of "President", CEO Joe Lacob Kerr has presented a trailer full of cash who, according to the League, will double at least the $ 5 million a year average of the five-year contract that Kerr signed in May 2014.
The new agreement came into effect on Friday after several league sources, with Kerr's signature coming in a matter of minutes or hours, or, longest, days. The agreement was first reported by ESPN.
The length of the extension was not confirmed, but a league source previously indicated that an additional three years had been discussed.
Although Kerr knew that he wanted to train beyond his present pact, expiring next spring, he also sought a better sense of health. He continues to focus on common ailments and other symptoms associated with multiple back surgeries three years ago.
Kerr recently said he feels much better than a year ago – he took a six-week leave in April 2017 – but acknowledges that there are activities, such as golf, of which he is still limited.
The warriors had no qualms about it. They have won three championships in four seasons under Kerr, whose skilful navigation of a loaded roster – which includes healthy ego despite the perception – is proof of his gift for the human touch.
Coaching in the NBA It's more about managing individuals than playing games, a task that most players in the league can fulfill. Kerr is not a perfect coach and has to admit it first, but no one on an NBA bank combines basketball background, skilful communication, awareness of work-life balance and modest manner.
The word from the front office, from Lacob and Myers, has been consistent for more than a year. Moreover, it is in complete agreement with the wishes of Kerr. That's what all the parties have wanted since last spring.
If health permits, Kerr is bound to be at work for a few more years, mainly because of the team winning at a record rate, but no less because nobody in the organization cares about being without to visualize it.
