On Wednesday afternoon, comedian Kevin Hart was announced as the host for the upcoming 91st Oscar awards. He had resigned on Thursday night.
The turn of events followed the outcry over previous anti-gay tweets and comments Hart had made during stand-up routines nearly 10 years ago. Some of the tweets were feverishly erased on Thursday all day, resulting in an instragram video by the comedian that only made things worse.
"My team is calling me, 'Oh my God, Kevin, everyone is excited about tweets,'" he said in this video. "Guys, I'm almost 40 years old. If you do not believe that people are changing, growing and evolving with age, I do not know what to say to you. If you want to keep people in a position where they always have to justify the past, you do. I'm the wrong one, man. "
These words sounded like a defiant apology to many. Hours later, Hart showed up with another video showing that the Academy of Fine Arts and Sciences had given him an ultimatum: apologize or we'll find a new host.
"I chose the apology," One-year-old actor-comedian said in the video. "The reason I passed is because I have addressed this several times. This is not the first time this has happened. I addressed it I talked about it I said where the rights and injustices were. I said who I am now and who I was then. I did it. I will not go back and strike the old times when I move on and I find myself in a very different place in my life.
That too sounded hollow to many. Less than two hours later, Hart announced on Twitter that he would withdraw from the show, and eventually apologized for the apology everyone was looking for.
"I've decided to take on this year's Oscars. "This is because I do not want to distract myself on a night to be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists, and I apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past, I'm sorry I'm developing and wanting to continue to do so My goal is to bring people together and not tear them apart A lot of love and appreciation to the Academy I hope we can meet again. "
Well located The Academy is in the unenviable position of throwing a net again to play a role that obviously nobody wanted. The announcement of Hart as Emcee on December 5 was pretty late in the game, and the sources say the organization had more trouble than usual to find someone for their show.
The Academy did not respond to a request for comment. RELATED VIDEO:
