Cubs manager Joe Maddon promised to submit an "interesting line-up" for the series finals on Wednesday against the Mets and left-hander Jason Vargas, and he did not disappoint.

David Bote started shortstop for the first time and started an inning-end double in the sixth. Bote started 14 games at shortstop for Iowa.

Addison Russell, who is disabled on the 10-day list, and Baez are the only players to have played shortstop for the Cubs this season.

The Cubs scored their only difference from Vargas in the second on a double by Willson Contreras and an infield single by Ian Happ.

Victor Caratini hit a two-run opponent homer left center with two out in the ninth.
