Kyrie Irving, a Boston Celtics point-watcher, had to pause in April after a pair of screws in his left knee had been infected by a previous injury.
On Thursday Irving was coached one-to-one with his coach in Las Vegas, detailing the extent of his injury and rehab ̵
The Celtics discovered the bacterial infection on the metal wiring and screws in his left patella, which was a consequence of the fracture suffered in the 2015 NBA Finals. The infection was only found when he underwent surgery in March to remove the tension wire in his knee.
That injury, he told Ohm Yongmisuk of ESPN, could have turned into a staph infection if it had not been treated on time. This treatment, he said, forced him to insert a catheter into a vein that penetrated his heart.
"I mean, you ask someone with an infection, they'll probably try to play it down," Irving told ESPN. "It's a personal thing because your body is going through it, I've fought an infection in a certain place in your body where you can not necessarily reach it with your hands, you have to go in and see what's going on and what happened to me, the metal wiring and screws that I had there, the infection was there, so I had to remove that and then take antibiotics for about two months.
"It might have evolved to stack, but good that we caught it early. I'm glad that's done. That was a long, long time in two months.
Irving, watching the USA basketball men's national team in Las Vegas, said he was looking forward to next season, and while Irving made progress on his rehab, he said to ESPN that he was in the fall " "willing to go to training camp."
And although he said it was a rigorous process returning from the infection, Irving thinks he'll be much better off.
"This probably has one of the first Summer in the last seven years, when I actually had time to develop and work things that I want to improve, "Irving told ESPN," I played every summer in the US, or I was injured for one summer or summer we come from a championship.
"It was a grind, and it caught up with me last season and now really got a chance Take my time and focus on my body this summer."
