LeBron James is committed to helping the people of Akron, no matter where he plays basketball, and one of his greatest achievements officially became a reality on Monday. The I Promise School opened in Akron on Monday. The first students went through the doors to start elementary school's first year of schooling.
James helped open the public school by funding it through the LeBron James Family Foundation and helping to financially support the construction and management of the school. According to the Los Angeles Times the I Promise School is an Akron public school for 240 vulnerable third- and fourth-graders who offer a special level of support and education.
The school offers services that help children deal with trauma, stress from parents struggling to make ends meet, and trouble from too much free time and lack of supervision. It also offers professional and family benefits for the children's parents to help them receive GEDs or treat unexpected job loss. In the school there is a pantry with donations from a food bank where parents can choose food for their families.
Every student gets a bike because the bicycles helped him get away from the more dangerous parts of his community.
