Lil Nas X finishes Mayor Pete Buttigieg's "Old Town Road" collaboration

Lil Nas X has worked with people like Billy Ray Cyrus, Keith Urban, BTS, and Young Thug. But there seems to be a collaboration he would not have: Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

The crossover pop star responsible for the mega hit "Old Town Road" and currently breaking records on the Billboard Hot 100 was the headliner of a live series. The show was hosted by Buzzfeed in New York on Thursday night.

The event titled Internet Live featured performances by Lil Nas X along with performances by Internet celebrities, Broadway singers, and the stars of . Jersey Shore . At some point, Buzzfeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith sat down to interview New York City mayor Bill de Blasio.

But the mayor was not the only presidential candidate from 2020 who was in talks on the program.

] The Daily Beast has learned that BuzzFeed has been in talks with Buttigieg, the openly gay mayor of South Bend, who has catapulted to prominence and early success in Democratic primary school by collaborating with "Old Town Road" the upcoming pop star. According to sources, however, the plan was thwarted when Lil Nas X rejected the proposal.

The singer was not personally against Buttigieg, sources said, but told Buzzfeed News that he did not want to be seen as a proponent of a particular candidate in the race.

As a result, the sources said the idea was dropped and Buttigieg did not attend the event.

The 37-year-old mayor said he was a fan of the young rapper's work and welcomed his recent decision to come out as a gay man. "As a fan, I'm thrilled and excited to see him in his truth as a member of the LGBTQ community," Buttigieg tweeted. "Welcome in the family!"

While the top Democratic candidate for 2020 is a fan of Lil Nas X and his viral classic "Old Town Road," it was Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), a longshot contender recently inducted into a Democratic dinner Iowa came out to the song.

Buttigieg received props from other musicians, including members of indie rock star Spoon, who praised his piano playing on their song "The Way We Get By."

BuzzFeed and Buttigieg's campaign declined comment. Lil Nas X did not respond to comment requests.
