On Saturday morning, two shootings took place in the Ascension and Livingston parishes near Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Suspected 21-year-old Dakota Theriot is charged with killing his parents Elizabeth and Keith Theriot, both 50, in the city of Gonzalez, according to Ascension Parish's sheriff's office.
The Theriots lived when MPs arrived at their home and identified their son as the shooter, Sherrick Bobby Webre told reporters.
Dakota Theriot is also suspected of killing three more people in the neighboring community of Livingston. The victims, Billy, Summer and Tanner Ernest, were found dead on Saturday morning, Sheriff's Office of Livingston Parish said.
At least one of the Livingston victims was a friend of Theriot, the Sheriff's Office for Theriot said on Saturday, saying they believe he is "armed and dangerous".
The suspect was charged with murder of first degree, illegal use of arms and invasion at home, Webre said to determine the motive behind the shootings.
