Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif unexpectedly landed Sunday in Biarritz, France, the city where this year's Seven Group Summit was held. His surprising arrival is said to have blinded the White House when President Trump and other world leaders meet in the French coastal town this weekend. Zarif's presence was at the behest of French President Emanuel Macron, who worked to defuse the crisis between the US and Iran. However, the French government stated that Zarif had only been invited to a meeting with the French Foreign Minister.
Trump had made no comment when reporters asked if he had previously been aware of Zarif's presence, and it is still unclear whether the two will meet during the summit. Trump has tightened tensions between the West and Iran and is following what the White House calls the "maximum pressure" against the country. Last month, the president imposed sanctions specifically against Zarif. In response to the sanctions, Finance Minister Stephen Mnuchin said that the Foreign Minister "spreads the propaganda and disinformation of the regime around the world".
