Thousands of uniformed and civilian police also patrolled the public observation areas.
New this year, two NYPD drones monitored the crowd, while nearby officials monitored the feeds in real time on their cell phones.

The celebration started hours before the show when viewers hit a distance of three kilometers on the FDR Drive filled.
The Wainwright family flew all the way from California to see the legendary New York fireworks.
"We saw things on the west coast and wanted to check them on the east coast," the family said.
"I come from Jersey and always watch it on TV or whatever, so I decided to come to New York and see for yourself," Karen Timley added.
