SINGAPORE – Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed has sharply criticized Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi for dealing with an ethnic crisis that has led to mass murders and the exodus of more than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims from their country.
Mahathir said Tuesday Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi "tries to defend the irrational" as he justifies the violence of the Myanmar security forces against Rohingya in Rakhine State.
He said that as a former political prisoner, Suu Kyi should understand the suffering.
Mahathir was asked about the subject at a press conference on the sidelines of a regional summit in Singapore.
