Majora's Masked Singers reach world record in less than an hour with 63 games



For six days, Speedrunner have found a way to complete The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask in less than an hour. The atmospheric sequel Ocarina of Time is best known for her long side quests and countless collectibles. A bug that gives players access to a hidden debug menu has saved a lot of the necessary hurry. The result is a run in which the ocarina is played countless times until the player gets items out of the developer's menu and then rushes to beat the game.

The "Any%" route category in speed running refers to completing games as quickly as possible using all available means, including disruptions. Majora's Mask runs of this type contain a collection of jumps and tricks that significantly shorten the execution time of the long game. Before this final series of runs using the Ocarina glitch, the Any% record was 1

hour, 15 minutes and 52 seconds, scored by Swedish runner Dennis "ennopp112" Haugen. In the last week, the runners were able to significantly shorten this time and collect records back and forth with the newly developed method. At the time of publication, Haugen has a new record time of 49 minutes and 42 seconds.

In order to use this new method, the runner must first use the so-called Index Warping. In Majora's Mask it is possible to go around the world with a song called Song of Soaring. It allows Link to travel to any Owl statue in the game world as long as these statues were awakened. (This is done by finding the statute and beating it with his sword.) There is also a "hidden" owl statue out of bounds on a card. Runners can reach this statue in different ways. If you have not activated any other owl statues, you can use this statue to move to many locations around the world, depending on where your cursor is on the break menu menu. For example, if you select Clock Town with the cursor, the runners are moved to another area, Milk Road. This trick can be used to travel the world in a different way than the game usually allows.

It turns out that this trick is also the backbone of a new discovery. If you play the Song of Soaring in the right way, the runners may exceed the memory content of a text box that appears after the song plays. This allows runners in the game to access memory values ​​that allow them to access a hidden debug menu. To access the debug menu, the song of soaring must be played 63 times. This process takes a little over ten minutes.

If that sounds complicated and strange, it's because it's so. Full breakdowns are available on YouTube and Pastebin. The shortcut is, however, that runners can play the song of soaring in a very specific way, which then unlocks the debug menu. From there, they can pick up the remains of the four dungeon bosses and the fierce deity mask, which is usually obtained by collecting all the masks in the game, and proceed to the final dungeon. Although Speedrunner must play the Song of Soaring 63 times to achieve this, the method saves time in the long run. The debug menu may sound strange to casual gamers. Many games have Any% speedrunning categories or other unique categories that allow runners to access hidden areas or content, as long as they do not use an external device. Some games, such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night have "ACE" categories. ACE stands for the execution of arbitrary code. In this case, it's a category where runners manipulate items in menus to change the game's memory and jump right into the credits. Currently, this debug menu trick is allowed for Majora's Mask because the menu can only be opened with in-game prompts. It is the beginning of a little sprint with fast times and exciting records.
