March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and Owensville, Missouri native, Mark Lough, encourages as many as he can to get her screening colonoscopy screenings. Something he wiped first, until it was too late.
Two years ago, Lough was diagnosed with colon cancer after suffering from constipation. He was 54 at the time, but doctors recommend that you make preventive colonoscopy by the age of 50.
"It's the third most common solid tumor," Dr. David Cort, Hospital Gastroenterologist Mercy. Dr. Cort says Missouri has one of the lowest screening rates in the country with only 64% of eligible adults routinely undergoing colonoscopies. "People give a lot of excuses and I just say to them, 'Listen, this is your life & # 39 ;," Cort said.
During a colonoscopy procedure, doctors examine and remove the inside of the colon in search of precancerous polyps.

His dog Dunkin was his crutch and the friend he relied on while fighting this disease. Since the diagnosis, his view of life has changed. "I realized I had a lot of friends, I can not imagine anything more humiliating, I just can not, it changes your attitude towards life, it makes you a nicer person, at least I hope it made me a nicer person "I'm trying to be," Lough said.
Lough says he regrets being stubborn when he goes to the doctor for a check-up, saying that the inconvenience is always worth it if it keeps you healthy. "It was extremely painful. I do not want anyone to ever have to go through this, "Lough said.
Lough and his dog Dunkin have become colon cancer advocates by talking to anyone who listens to them and promotes social media, and Lough posts all his updates "I'll go to the top of the highest mountain and shout it until I lose my voice," Lough said.
The National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable set up an initiative to attract more adults, ages 50-75 It is 80×18, which is the commitment to reach 80% of eligible adults in the country by the end of 2018. So far, only 56% of adults are screened in St. Louis.
