14:33 pm: The move is now official. Moore was placed on the 10-day IL and Righty Chasen Bradford was given the option to set up a service room.
10:49 am: The Mariners carry young infielders J.P. Crawford and Shed Long leading the weekend series against the Red Sox, according to Corey Brock of The Athletic ( Twitter link ). Both players are on their way to Boston to join the club. The two promotions took place after Dee Gordon had ended the game on Thursday against the Yankees with a fastball on the wrist. Infielder Dylan Moore is also suffering from a wrist injury and should undergo tests to determine the root cause of the problem.
Both Crawford and Long are considered potential long-term pieces in the Seattle Infield. Everyone came into the organization this winter as part of the massive trade of General Manager Jerry Dipoto to "rethink" the squad. Crawford, the 1
will make his MLB debut the first time he gets into a game and is widely considered one of Seattle's finest farmworkers. The Mariners thought Long was high enough to swap last season's second-round winner, outfielder Josh Stower's in January – nearly seven months after the draft – against the Yankees. The Yankees had just acquired Long as part of the deal, sending Sonny Gray to Cincinnati, although the Mariners' long interest in Long was due to the exchange with three teams. He has played the second base, third base and left field in the Mariners organization this season, although the second base or the left field seems to be his longest-term home. Long praises above-average power and speed, and has a track record in taking walks with a healthy clip to offset an exercise rate in the range of 22 to 23 percent.
Up to this point in the season, the 24-year-old Crawford has three homers, seven doubles, three steals and almost as many runs (19) as .319 / .420 / .457 as in Triple-A Tacoma Strikeouts (25) and 138 record appearances. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Long strikes with .276 / .350 / .504 with five homers, 10 doubles and four trebles, while 14 runs against 31 strikeouts (also in 138 record appearances).
The arrival of The Two Respected Young Infielders is likely to signal Gordon and / or Moore an excursion to the injury list. Given the importance they have for the future of Mariners, they will probably both have to afford bats every day. This is likely to limit the Tim Beckham season, though seasoned Infielder's bat is likely to have cooled after a hot start to the season. Beckham scored in his first 10 games a goal of .410 / .477 / .846, but scored only a hit rate of .206 / .260 / .361 and has since scored a hit rate of 35.5 percent at 104 record appearances.
Even if both infielders stay with the majors from then on, the Mariners will control Crawford for five years after the 2019 campaign and Long for six years. Crawford came into the season with a year and 20 days of MLB deployment, but there are only 144 days remaining in the 2019 campaign so he can not reach the 172-day mark he would have to cross the threshold for two full years of service in the Major League. The promotion could put both players on the road to Super Two status, making them both eligible for arbitration four times instead of three – Crawford will start after the 2020 season and Long will start after the 2021 campaign. Of course, all of this could change, depending on whether an option exists on Tacoma.
