Mars looks so funny now

NASA's Hubble may age fast, but it can still take really amazing photos. Scientists have recently used the telescope on Mars and Saturn to capture some new images as they approach Earth this year. NASA is now showing off their fantastic photo skills. The pictures are great, but one thing will immediately catch your eye in the photo of Mars: It looks so funny.

Most images you see of Mars – news articles, documentaries, or wherever – have been made in the last few decades while the Marsh sky was clear. The planet and its orange and brown spots are always clearly visible. This is not the case this time.

Mars is in the middle of one of the strongest dust storms ever seen. Originally covering only a small part of the planet, the storm has blown hard enough to envelop the entire planet. The intricate details in most of Mars' photos have disappeared from Hubble's latest footage and have been replaced by blurry orange stripes as the dust clouds cover the floor below.

It's pretty wild to imagine that a whole planet will be engulfed by a single storm, but that's exactly what happens here. The Martian surface is so dry and dusty that strong winds are capable of producing large dust storms every few years, but rarely do they reach that magnitude. The last time such a storm was observed was in 2007, and at that time it covered all but some of the mountain tops of the Red Planet.

This time the storm has very little of the visible surface and, as you can see from the Hubble photo, the planet's South Pole is the only clearly recognizable feature that still stands out. The scientists are still not sure when the storm will fade, but have been for almost two months. In the meantime, we will all just have to be grateful that this will not happen on Earth … at least not yet.
