Secretary of Defense James Mattis jokingly referred to new security adviser John Bolton as "the Incarnate Devil" during their first meeting on Thursday.
The two laughed as they entered the Pentagon for the first official meeting on recent speculation that they might not work well together in the Trump administration.
"Ambassador Bolton, so nice to see you, thank you for coming and it's good to finally meet you, I heard that you really are the incarnated devil, and I wanted to meet you," said Mattis.
Bolton, a former United Nations ambassador known for a bombastic style, replaces HR McMaster, a three-star general, who is increasingly clashed with Trump
Mattis, a retired naval general who advocates for the Using diplomacy and strengthening relations with NATO, he speculated that he would fight Bolton, a hawk fighting against North Korea and Iran. "No worries, no reservations," he said at a press conference on Tuesday. "The last time I checked, he's American. I can work with an American, OK? So I'm not in the least bit concerned with that. "
