Mega Millions $ 522 Million Jackpot: A ticket, sold in San Jose, California, takes the grand prize

A winning ticket was sold for a whopping $ 522 million Mega Millions jackpot, with a one-time cash option of $ 308 million, Mega Millions officials said.

The winning numbers on Tuesday night were 1, 2, 4, 19 and 29, with mega-ball number 20.

The ticket was purchased at Ernie's Liquors in San Jose, California, officials said ,

In addition, eight cards equaled the five white balls to win the second prize of the game. Six, each worth $ 1

million, were sold in Arizona, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, and two in New Jersey. Two sold in Massachusetts and Texas included the optional Megaplier (a $ 1 purchase available in most states) worth $ 3 million each.

Tickets cost $ 2. Sales periods vary by state, but are usually one to two hours before the draw.

Overall, odds remain of winning a jackpot despite the larger payouts at 1: 258.9 miserable million for Mega Millions and 1 in 292.2 million for Powerball.

The odds of winning both jackpots are one in 75 quadrillion – that's 15 zeros – said Allstate data researchers.

The average American spends about $ 200 a month on lottery tickets, even though some states spend more. According to a study by LendEDU, the average Massachusetts resident spends $ 735 a year on lottery tickets. Rhode Islanders plummet $ 514 a year. And if you live in Delaware or New York, you probably spend about $ 400 a year or $ 33 a month (see map below).

The chance to win "Scratcher" – these small instant win tickets that you can buy for prizes ranging from $ 1 to $ 50 – are better, but it's still not possible to get rich.
