Metro Exec on Epic Games Store Exclusives: "We should welcome Epic and its business model"

Metro Exodus was one of the first known games to have skipped Steam for release exclusively in the Epic Games Store. This announcement angered part of the audience, in part because the game could be pre-ordered before switching to Steam. Those who pre-ordered on Steam were honored, but the move still caused some controversy.

In an interview with GI.biz, Koch media chief Klemens Kundratitz said his company's deal with Epic has indeed caused "some waves". but overall he is "very happy" with the commercial performance of the game.

"Overall, I still think that as an industry and as publishers Epic and Epic should welcome their business model," he said. "We have a strong relationship with Epic and we continue to have a strong relationship with Steam."

An acidic point for Kundratitz was the timing of the announcement. He said he wished his company could have betrayed the message earlier. "That was not perfect," he said.

"We need to get a digital partner that offers a far more compelling Rev Share model than anyone else, and I think it's a role model for us and for other digital partners too – a 70/30 split is frankly anachronistic ", he said.

Already in February, Kundratitz said the same thing, when it became known that Metro would leave Exodus Steam for Epic. "Epic's generous revenue is a game change that allows publishers to invest more in content creation or to pass on savings to players," said Kundratitz. THQ Nordic announced in May that Metro Exodus sold 2.5 times more copies than Metro: Last Light during its PC boot window. Exodus recouped all development and marketing costs shortly after launch.
