A look back at the story of Juwan Howard, the former basketball star from Michigan, on the national stage.
Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard has filled in the rest of his staff – and there are some familiar faces returning to Ann Arbor.
On Monday afternoon, UM announced Jay Smith's appointment as director, Chris Hunter as director of basketball operations, David Metzendorf as video analyst, and Jaaron Simmons as graduate manager.
All four are closely associated with the program – notably Smith, Michigan co-trainer from 1989-1996 and staff during Howard's UM career.

Smith has been head coach at Kalamazoo College since 2016. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach in Detroit from 2008 to 2016. He was head coach at Central Michigan from 1998 to 2006, leading the Chippewas to two conference titles and a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2002-06. Prior to that, he served as head coach at Grand Valley State University in the 1996-97 season.
"There are many people who have helped me during my career, but Jay Smith is someone special, with whom I have a deep relationship and the greatest respect," Howard said in a statement. "He has an incredible passion for the game and his ability to connect with young men will be invaluable to us, and we are very happy that he returns to Ann Arbor and joins our staff."

The other three members of the support staff have recently joined the program: Hunter, a former player from 2002 to 2006, has been with the Wolverines since 2014. He has been the director of the basketball business since 2017.
Metzendorf, the last Assistant coach at Holy Cross, attended high school in Ann Arbor and was a summer intern with the program from 2010-12 .He was the special assistant to the head coach at Cornell in the 2013-14 season before being drafted by 2014/16 Co-coach acted.
Simmons spent the past year playing professional basketball overseas, the former point guard was a graduate transfer during the 2017/18 season in Michigan, where the Wolverines made the big ten turn and won the national title fight.
