] Michigan interviewed Howard on Tuesday and allegedly made him an offer on Wednesday morning.
The 46-year-old has worked as an assistant coach for the Miami Heat for the past seven years.
After his career in Michigan, he played 20 seasons in the NBA. As a member of the recruitment class "Fab Five" in 1991 Howard played three seasons for the Wolverines and helped them to two Final Fours.
Although he has no experience as a head coach or college coach, some of his former teammates supported him for the job in Michigan, including LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.
With the hiring, Michigan is now the only FBS-level school where alumni serve as head coaches for both football and basketball programs.
