Microsoft's long-sleeved Surface device, which can be placed in half, has now surfaced again ̵
For the past Two years, it seems, Microsoft has been on the development of a device codenamed Andromeda Englippig. It has been featured in patents, reports and rumors; was mentioned several times in operating systems; and it has been reported that it appears to contain a dual-screen design.
Microsoft Andromeda will create a new tech category
It will also be in the bag, according to The Verge, who has received an internal document from the company. Microsoft describes Andromeda as something that will establish a "new and disruptive" device category to influence the entire surface portfolio, change its trajectory, and redefine what is considered a PC and a cell phone.
"It's a new handheld device form factor that brings innovative new hardware and software experiences together to create a truly personal and versatile computing experience," Microsoft said in the email.
The unit will supposedly have a foldable display that bridges the gap of the hinge when it is fully open. Microsoft is also working on a stylus suitable for Andromeda, which will serve as a pen for notes and other things.
Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has refused to comment on the latest report, says The Verge.
Six years ago, the company introduced Surface RT and Surface Pro as computer products that would create a whole new category to question our preconceptions about the differences between tablets and laptops. The Surface Pro has been successful in this regard, and some companies – even Apple to some extent – have now clearly mimicked Microsoft's strategy. It appears that the company wants Andromeda to be treated as the next big rip in the way we use pocket-sized computers.
What Andromeda means to Microsoft
Unfortunately, Andromeda, if it is real, is still being developed in Microsoft, and there is still the possibility that things will change. After all, Microsoft seems to have canceled all plans for the highly anticipated Surface Phone, so it's no coincidence to just throw things away. Yet, it is a promising product of a company that is proud of its laptop and desktop operating system – a move that signals Microsoft's revitalized investment in mobile experiences, and an attempt to innovate and revolutionize that category
"It will blur the boundaries between mobile and stationary computing, "says Microsoft.
