Microsoft: For this reason, Windows Defender AV is not rated higher in new antivirus testing

Video: For malware, Windows 10 is twice as secure as Windows 7.

Microsoft Windows Defender is ranked seventh of 15 antivirus products (AV) in an independent test. But the results do not say the whole picture, Microsoft argues.

With improvements to Windows 10's built-in Windows Defender anti-virus program, some users are questioning whether it pays to pay for a third-party product from Symantec, McAfee, or Kaspersky.

But according to the latest results for Windows Home and Business use by the German AV benchmarking company AV-Test, Windows Defender is still behind third-party AV vendors and ranks seventh with four other vendors.

According to AV-Test, the best AV products for Windows 1

0 in terms of protection, performance and usability in December were AhnLab, Avira, Bitdefender, Kaspersky and McAfee.

Windows Defender was rated 100 percent of the new and old malware in protection, but lost points in performance, indicating how much an AV slows down applications and Web sites. and usability, which counts false positives or instances where AV incorrectly identifies a file as malicious.

The Windows Defender performance rating has been pushed down as the installation of frequently used applications has slowed beyond the industry average and falsely misidentified 16 legitimate software products compared to the industry average of four.

However, Microsoft wants enterprise customers to know that Windows Defender represents only half of the image, as customers can deploy the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) stack components, including Smartscreen, Application Guard and Application Control.

In the January and February test, Windows Defender also achieved 100 percent protection. However, it missed two samples. Since then, it has retrained its machine learning classifiers to recognize them.

But Microsoft notes in a new paper that Defender ATP has caught them, which is not reflected in the results of AV-Test or other test companies. Microsoft hopes to change that so that testers include so-called batch components in ATP.

"As the threat grows, Microsoft and other security platform providers will continue to develop their product capabilities to detect threats across multiple attack phases," writes the Microsoft Windows Defender research team.

"We hope that independent testers will continue to develop their methods – our customers need more transparency and better looks, which can provide an end-to-end solution in terms of overall preventative protection, including the quality of individual components such as anti-virus programs.

"Microsoft is working intensively with several independent testers to develop security testing that focuses on end-to-end security testing."

Windows Defender continues to have problems mistakenly classifying legal apps as malware January 1965.

However, Microsoft claims that all 21 of the misclassified apps were either media players or audio mixers, which is not common in enterprise environments.

It also argues that the false positives in synthetic testing Do not use contextual information that Microsoft uses in real-world computers that defends against it to mistakenly mark clean applications as bad.

And Windows Defender is still significantly slower than the industry average for installing frequently used applications. However, Microsoft again disagrees that corporate users generally spend less time installing new apps and more time using browsers, email, and word processors.
