Microsoft today announced that Windows insiders in the Fast Ring will soon be testing a new version of Windows 1
Windows insider says Whaaaat?
"As the update for Windows 10 May 2019 will soon be released for the Release Preview Ring, we plan to move Windows Insiders to 20H1 in the Fast Ring," a Microsoft Post at Insiders reads. "We will also reintroduce the small group of insiders who have chosen Skip Ahead into the Fast Ring. We want to make this change in the coming weeks.
What this means is unclear.
Firstly, the end of the Magic Window, the time when insiders can safely log PCs off of the PC, and resume normal updating along with the rest of humanity, is coming soon. If you want to do that, now is the time.
But it's a first for you if you push the Fast Ring Tester forward two versions of Windows. Microsoft has done this before and only once with those in Skip Ahead.
So let's speculate.
We know that 19H2 is still happening. So Microsoft needs to have a plan for testing. Mary Jo believes that this change means that 19H2 will be a little update, and I think she's right. I continue to think that 19H2 is only tested in the slow ring, which is interesting on some levels. Most of all, Microsoft forgets that the slow ring will even end for months. I think that will have to change.
If you combine this news with this week's catastrophic retreat on Windows as a service, Microsoft seems to be taking it seriously that Windows 10 is less intrusive and company alike for all its customers, individuals, and individuals. I've always believed that this is inevitable, but seeing it happen suddenly and quickly is almost breathtaking. It's like seeing the Berlin Wall go down.
