Microsoft's gaming business is on the rise. The company today announced results for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year and the full year ended June 30, and times are good for the Xbox business.
For the quarter, Microsoft gaming revenue was $ 2.28 billion, while full-year revenue was $ 10.35 billion. This represents growth of $ 1.64 billion in the year-ago quarter and $ 9.05 billion for the full prior fiscal year.
By comparison, GI.biz indicates that Sony's gaming business generated $ 17.29 billion in annual revenue for the full year. Revenue for the last fiscal year was $ 9.7 billion.
Microsoft also noted that sales of Xbox software and services grew 36 percent year-over-year. This was attributed "primarily" to third-party titles, rather than to Microsoft's own games.
Xbox Live's active users totaled 57 million in the quarter, up from 53 million in the same period last year. The number of active users declined however, compared to the last quarter (59 million).
