Alabama Offensive Coordinator Mike Locksley was appointed head coach in Maryland.
Locksley has agreed in principle to be the trainer of the Terrapins, and is expected to be presented at a press conference on Thursday. Stadium.com and InsideMDSports.com first reported the hiring.
Locksley had two separate stations at the Terrapins. His last stop was from 201
Since then, Locksley has further increased the ranks of Nick Saban coaching staff. Native American Washington, DC, began his career as an analyst and was promoted to wide receiver coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2017 before being appointed an offensive coordinator.
This fall, he led Alabama to one of his best offensive seasons under Saban. Last Tuesday, Locksley won the Broyles Award, which is awarded annually to the nation's leading co-trainer .
In his first season as an offensive coordinator, Locksley oversees a Crimson Tide attack averaging 47.9 points and 527.6 yards per game in 2018. The Tide already has school records for points (623), total offense ( 6,859), offensive touchdowns (77) and overtaking maneuvers (4,231) in one season. Alabama Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has thrown in 2018 for 3,353 yards and a school record of 37 touchdowns. He is only the fourth quarterback to throw 3,000 yards in a season at the UA.
"Mike does a good job," Saban said earlier this season. "I think he's a good play caller. He organizes things well for the offensive employees. I think we really have a good offensive staff, and I think all these guys work well together and do a good job. His leadership has probably contributed in a very positive way. We were productive.
Senior Running Back Damien Harris added, "It was great to work with Locksley. He has been here for a while, so we already had a relationship with him, so I think that has really helped to smooth things out. It was a pretty easy transition. We have every confidence in Coach Locksley, and he has done a great job so far. We know that he will do everything in his power to put us in the best position to succeed as an offense.
As Locksley is hired elsewhere, this marks the fourth season of the season in which Saban will have to replace a coordinator who will accept an accepted head coaching. Kirby Smart will meet Alabama on Saturday in the SEC title game, traveled to Georgia in 2015, . Jeremy Pruitt went to Tennessee in 2017.
No. 1 Alabama will face No. 4 in the semi-finals of the Orange Bowl on Saturday, December 29th.
