Mike Shildt named St. Louis Cardinals manager after 45 days as an interim

The St. Louis Cardinals have secured an unscheduled manager search. On Tuesday, the Cardinals announced that they had canceled "Interim" from interim manager Mike Shildt's title, which gave him a three-year extension after leading the team to an incredible turnaround since the All-Star break. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was the first to report on the upcoming train.

Shildt was the interim substitute for Mike Matheny, who was fired on July 14. The Cardinals went 47-46 under Matheny and when he was thrown into third place in the National League Central and four times out of the Wild Card.

Under Shildt, the cards are 26-12 and they have climbed to second place in NL Central. Game lead for the first wildcard. The cards may not have known that Shildt was the man for the job when they called him provisional manager, but you can not argue successfully.

Shildt differs significantly from almost all managers hired in this offseason. Men like Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees, Mickey Callaway of the New York Mets and Dave Martinez of the Washington Nationals are all young, former players who had no management experience before they were hired. Shildt, on the other hand, is 50 years old and has never played professionally, but he has taken a more traditional career path for managers.

When Yahoo Sports talked to Shildt about his team's turnaround, he talked a lot about the clubhouse and the quality of the people in it.

"Every single one in this clubhouse is truly dedicated not only to their own careers, but to the success of this team," said Shildt Yahoo Sports. "If you have that, then it's more about harnessing your energy and effort and competing on that day, rather than helping with the ego or the things that can get in the way of the team." Www.mjfriendship.de/de/index.php?op…=view&id=167 John Cardinal, president of the baseball team, John Mozeliak, explained why the team took the step now:

It was a breathtaking turn for the Cardinals. Before Matheny was fired, it seemed the cards would miss the playoffs for the third year in a row. Now they will come into possession of a wild card spot in September. It's hard to say how much a manager affects players, aside from the lineup and decisions in the game, but the Cardinals front office is obviously confident that Shildt is the right man for the job.
