Actress and writer Mindy Kaling has accused the Emmy Awards of cutting her out of office nominations because she is a colorful woman.
Kaling starred in the US version of the show as well as executive producer, director and writer.
But she said the television academy that oversees the Emmys has been trying to squeeze her producer credit.
"I * was * singled out," she said. "The younger person and woman of color. Easiest to dismiss."
Kaling played Kelly in the sitcom and wrote and directed a series of episodes. She also had success with the Mindy project and was recently seen in Late Night with Dame Emma Thompson and wrote it. The 40-year-old told Elle magazine that the Academy had forced her to undergo a "humiliating" process to prove her contribution.
They let me, not one of the other producers, fill out an entire form and write an essay on all my contributions as author and producer, "she said." I had to get letters from all the other male, white producers who said that I contributed when my actual record stood for itself. "
" No one was singled out "
The TV Academy personally denied the process and said," Each executive producer and screenwriter producer was asked to to justify his producer credits. "
A spokesman for the Academy told the Los Angeles Times," No one was singled out. "Their answer" does not make sense. "
" There were other producers of Office authors who were NOT from the List were deleted. Just me, "she wrote.
" I worked so hard and it was I had written so many episodes, put so much time into the editing room, that the academy rejected them because they could not understand me in it was able. Luckily I was saved by my friends, the other producers.
Kaling was listed in the nominees as a producer in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series in 2007 and 2008 and as Co-Executive Producer of 2009-1
She noted that the incident occurred about 10 years ago and "Maybe it would not happen now" – but "it happened to me." Kaling has also apologized to the Academy.
